This method uses the School Contacts (SContact.skl) file. This is a simple, quick method, but note that this information is not linked to any other information in the database.
Step 1: Open Schools file. Open the Schools file using the blue button on the main menu and find the teacher's school.
Step 2: Create a record for each teacher who did an externship. Enter the teacher's name, phone number, subject area or grade level, etc. in the School Contacts subform. (This subform looks similar to the Employer Contacts list.) Then click the Detail button to go to the detail screen. In the box called Activities, enter Summer Externship 2001 (or the appropriate activity name), the employer name, the externship level (use popup list), and start and end dates. The "Hours" field is optional. This box can hold up to three activities per teacher. It uses a "repeating field" which means you a FIND will search all three lines.
REPORTING: Display a list and count. Use this information to produce a list and count of teacher externships. Do a "FIND" to find all the teachers in this year's externship program and then go to the Externship/Professional Development List to display a list.
SHARING/EXCHANGING FILES: Share the School Contacts file with your Partnership or WIB office. If you send database files to your local partnership or WIB office, be sure to include the SContact.skl file. |
Teacher Externship Levels
L1 Job Shadow Teachers shadow a company employee and/or tour a company for one or two days. There are usually limited curriculum development expectations placed on teachers who participate in the first step in awareness.
L2 Job Shadow with Curriculum Development Teachers combine job shadows with curriculum development courses or project based learning workshops.
L3 Industry Exposure Employees introduce teachers to the organization and functions of the various divisions of a company over one or two weeks. Teachers are usually expected to use their observations to develop curriculum components based on their experiences.
L4 Industry Immersion Teachers work at a company for three to seven weeks. Their host company gives participants responsibility for projects and/or daily tasks in the workplace. Teachers are then expected to link their experience to their classroom through projects, curriculum and pedagogy.
L5 Full Workplace / Curriculum Integration Teachers work in a company from two months up to one year. Teachers are completely immersed in the workplace and are treated as full time employees. During this period or after, teachers are required to develop new curriculum that incorporates and focuses on the development of successful workplace skills for students. Industry representatives participate in the curriculum development to ensure integration of the workplace standards. Source: University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute, Feb. 1999
