Topic 2 - What's New in the Database This Year

What's New in the FY2009 School to Career Database?

  1. This year's version makes just minor changes ...
  2. The buttons on the Main Menu have been slightly re-arranged, and the yellow Activity button is now first.
  3. The Activity screen has been slightly re-arranged to be more user-friendly.
  4. New screens for participation in school-based activities were added in October and are being used by the BioTeach/Life Sciences Career Development (LSCD) schools. These screens are in the background unless you want them. For example, on the ACTIVITY LIST screen, you can now click a button called "GO TO LIST" to find a list of participants in any activity.
  5. There were minor changes to the dropdown list of supervisors/contacts and the dropdown list of teachers/staff on the placement screen.
  6. The dropdown list of WIBs/Local Partnerships on the Setup Screen was updated. You can now choose an "[Edit]" option at the end of the list to edit this list.
  7. The Schools file was updated. The list continues to grow, and there are now 1,870 schools. See the online database manual, http://www.skillslibrary.org/mstc/tableofcontents.htm, Topic #21, to see how to shorten this list to include just the schools you work with.
  8. The size of the screens has been slightly adjusted for better readability. The current version of FileMaker Pro allows you to choose to make this automatic adjustment. Click "Edit, Preferences" on the menubar to change preferences.
  9. Some regions want to select a random sample of Work-Based Learning Plans and export to a file. If you do, in the AllPlans file, look for a new layout called "Select for Export," type in the number of plans you want in your sample, and follow the instructions to select a sample and export.

During the summer, five sites are piloting the online, web-based version of the WBLP. After the pilot, more information will be provided about using these online screens and exchanging data between the online and PC-based screens.
